Experience using Elixir
Our experience with Elixir has been fantastic. We were drawn to the language for its focus on building high-performance, fault-tolerant, distributed systems with excellent developer ergonomics and the functional paradigm. We appreciated the community's philosophy of optimizing for a baseline stack where you can go very far with the language's core features without pulling in supplementary technologies to compensate for inherent limitations. What worked well: We've been able to produce highly readable, maintainable, and correct code even as newcomers to the language. Phoenix LiveView has been incredible, and we've successfully paired it with Vue.js through the LiveVue library, which bridges the gap beautifully and lets us leverage Vue components seamlessly within LiveView. The CQRS pattern (Commands/Queries) felt natural in Elixir, and we've built a clean separation between reads and writes across our marketplace, sessions, and payment domains. Task-based async patterns have made it straightforward to handle non-blocking operations without complexity. What was challenging: Understanding all the conventions and patterns that are more well-traveled in other ecosystems took time. Debugging and deployments were occasionally less straightforward than we expected, requiring us to learn Elixir-specific approaches. What others should know: The community resources are exceptional - ElixirConf talks on YouTube, blogs, and books helped us tremendously. Contrary to popular belief that less widely-used languages don't work well with AI coding assistants, we've found tools like Cursor and Claude Code perform quite well with Elixir. The investment in learning the ecosystem pays off quickly when you see how much you can accomplish with the core stack.
